莎士比亚是英国文学史上最杰出的剧作家，他的作品中不仅有着激动人心的情节，其中使用的修辞方法更值得我们学习。
莎士比亚擅长使用矛盾修辞法，尤其是悖论的使用。在他的传世巨作《罗密欧与朱丽叶》中，有这样一段文字：
nurse: his name is romeo, and a montague.
the only son of your great enemy.
juliet: my only love sprung from my only hate.
too early seen unknown and known too late!
prodigious birth of love that it is to me,that i must love a loathed enemy.
在上面的节选中，my only love sprung from my only hate，在正常的句子中是无法理解的，但是，在这个情境中，莎士比亚利用这种矛盾的手法生动地表现出了juliet 对她与romeo 之间爱情的矛盾情感。
提喻也是莎士比亚戏剧中常用的修辞手法，如在the taming of the shrew中：
return to her?
no, rather i abjure all roofs and choose …
to be a comrade with the wolf and owl.
在这段句子中，roofs 并不是指正常意义下的“屋顶”的意思，而是指代整个建筑，指代整个房子。wolf 和 owl在这里虽然是单数，但是它们指代整个狼群和夜枭，也可以说是夜晚出没的野兽和鸟类。
通感也被莎士比亚运用在了他的作品中，在twelfth night中，有这样一段描写：
if music be the food of love, play on.
这里，因为通感的运用，music好像变成了可以品尝的食物，这种味觉与听觉的通用使句子更加生动可感。
另外，在julius ceasar中，antony对brutus 的描述中the noble brutus, for brutus is an honorable man，等句子与brutus刺杀ceasar的行为形成了强烈的反讽，表达出了antony对brutus的谴责及他杀害ceasar的不光彩的耻辱。
