知识讲解：和enough to是初中英语教材中的重要结构。在一定条件下它们可以相互转换，并经常成为中考热点，请看下面三道中考试题：
1．the water was so dirty that we couldn't drink it．

2．the child is so young that he can't put on his clothes．
the child isn'tput on his clothes．（'99四川宜宾）
3．the problem is too difficult for me to work out．
the problem isn'tfor me to work out．（2001重庆市）
由分析可知答案为：1．too，to 2．old enough to 3．easy enough
那么在什么情况下三者可以相互转换呢？根据其结构特点我们可以看出：
一、so．．．that与too．．．to的转换
当that引导的从句为否定式时，从句主语与主语的主语相同时，so．．．that可转换为too．．．to结构；若从句主语与主句的主语不相同时，so．．．that可转换为too．．．for sb．to结构。例如：
he is so young that he can't go to school．→ he is too young to go to school．
the box is so he**y thathe can'tliftit．→the box is too he**y for him to lift．
二、so．．．that与enough to的转换
当that引导的从句为否定式时，若从句主语与主句主语相同时，so．．．that可转换为enough to的否定结构；若从句主语与主句主语不相同时，so．．．that可转换为 enough for sb．to的否定结构。注意：转换后的形容词（副词）要用其相应的反义词。
例如：the man is so old that he can't go to work．→the man isn't young enough to go to work．
the desk is so he**y that i can't moveit．→the desk isn't light enough for me to move．
三、enough to的句式为否定式时，enough to可以转换为too．．．to结构。但转换后的too．．．to结构中的形容词（副词）要用其相应的反义词。例如：
he is not old enough to do the job．→he is too young to do the job．
tom didn't walk slowly enough for us to keep up with him．→tom walked too fast for us to keep up with him．
3. rather than 不与would连用时，表示客观事实，意为“是……而不是……；与其……不如……”可用instead of替换。它连接的并列成分可以是名词、代词、形容词、介词(短语)、动名词、分句、不定式、动词等。
现分述如下：
1) 连接两个名词或代词
he is an explorer rather than/instead of a sailor. 与其说他是一个海员，不如说他是一个探险者。
you rather than i are going to go camping. 是你而不是我要去要野营。
i decided to write rather than (to) telephone. 我决定写信而不打**。
与instead of
1． 作为短语介词，instead of 后面常跟名词、代词和动名词，偶尔也跟复合结构。例如：
i h**e come instead of my brother. he is ill.
i will go instead of you.
i will stay at home instead of playing basketball.
2． instead 单独使用的时候式副词，常用于句末。例如：
we’ve no coffee. would you like tea instead.
我没有咖啡了，喝茶行吗？
it will take days by car, so let’s fly instead..
坐汽车得好几天时间，所以我们还是改乘飞机吧。
d. besides prep.除……以外与except
besides singing english songs, there are many other fun ways to learn engligh. (p66) 除演唱英语歌曲外，还有许多其他愉快地学习英语途径。
要点分析：besides用作介词，意为“除……以外（还有）”，指在整体中加入一部分，含义是肯定的。如：
there are many rivers in china besides the changjiang and huanghe. 中国除了长江、黄河之外，还有许多河流。
except意为“除……以外（不再有）”表示从整体中除去一部分，含义是否定的。如：
everyone is at school today except lin tao. 今天除了林涛，大家都上学了。
