one morning when a vixen was taking her babies out of the lair, she sawalioness and her cub.

why do you h**e only one child, dear dame?" asked the vixen. "look at myhealthy andnumerous children here, and imagine, if you are able, how a proudmother should feel.

the lioness said calmly, "yes, just look at that beautiful collection. what arethey? foxes!
i've only one, but remember, that one is a lion."
母狮平静地说：“是呀，看看这漂亮的一大群，他们都是狐狸！我只有一个，可他毕竟是一头狮子。”

a bird was confined in a cage outside a window. she often sang at night whenall other birds were asleep.

蝙蝠说：“你现在才懂得谨慎已没用了，你若在变为囚徒之前就懂得，那该多好呀！”说完就飞走了。

when hercules was walking in the forest, he saw a ball lying on the ground. hekicked it because it blocked his way.
赫尔克里斯在森林里漫步时，看到前面地上有一个球挡住了路，他就一脚把它踢开了。
to his surprise, the ball did not roll away, but grew much bigger than before. sohe kicked it again much harder.
令他惊讶的是，球不但没有滚开，反而越来越大，于是他更用力地踢它。
他越用力地踢，球变得越大，后来球竟将路完全堵住了。
这时，雅典娜出现了，她对他说：“不要再踢了，赫尔克里斯，这个球叫冲突，不去管它，它很快就变小了。”

恋爱中的狮子。
a lion once fell in love with a beautiful girl, so he went to her parents and askedthem to marry her to him.
一只狮子爱上了一位美丽的女孩儿，便找到她的父母向她求婚。
the old parents did not know what to say. they did not like the idea of givingtheir daughterto the lion, but they did not want to enrage the king of beasts.
女孩儿的父亲不知道该如何回答，他不忍将女儿许配给野兽，但又害怕激怒这兽中之王。
at last the father said, "we are glad to marry our daughter to you, but we fearthat you might possibly hurt her. so if you remove your claws and teeth, we will giveher to you."
于是父亲说：“我们很乐意将女儿嫁给你，但又怕你不小心伤害她，如果你拔去牙齿，剁掉利爪，我们就将女儿嫁给你。”
the lion loved the girl very much, so he trimmed his claws and took out his bigteeth. when he came to the parents again, they simply laughed in his face, and beathim out of their house.
狮子非常爱这个女孩儿，于是他修剪了爪子，拔掉了尖牙后又去找女孩的父母。可是这时，他们嘲笑他，并把他赶了出去。
寓意：有些人轻易相信别人的话，抛弃自己的长处，结果轻而易举地被原来害怕他们的人击败了。
