than 而不是；与其….宁愿。
1）常用于“平行语结构中”rather than 前后两部分语法应该一致，如：
a) the job will take months rather than weeks. (两个名词)
b) the decision was taken for political rather than military reasons. (两个形容词)
c) i’d prefer to go in summer rather than in winter. (两个作状语的介词短语)
d) it was what he meant rather than what he said annoyed me. (两个从句)
2）当主语中的平行部分为不定式时，rather than 后面部分可以是带to的不定式（比较正式），或不带to的不定式，也可以是-ing分词，如：
i decided t write rather than telephone /to telephone/telephoning.
3) 当主句动词为过去式，rather than 后面的动词若与主句动词同时发生，则该动词也用过去式，但若该动词暗示将来要发生的事，则该动词用不带to的不定式，如：
a) he lay rather than sat in his armchair. (过去式—过去式)
b) rather than cause trouble, he left. (不带to的不定式—过去式)
2. be/become addicted to sth./doing sth. 沉湎于…；对….上瘾。
3. accompany sth./with sth./by sth. 与….同时存在或发生。
thunder accompanies lightening. 雷声伴随着闪电。
accompany sb. at/on +乐器名，意为：为某人伴奏。
1. caution
(1) n. 小心，谨慎。
you must exercise/use extreme caution when crossing this road.
with caution 小心翼翼地。
for caution’s sake 为慎重起见。
(2) vt. caution against/to/not to
警告，劝….小心。
she cautioned the child against talking to strange men.
2. compliment
compliment sb. on sth. 因某事而赞美某人。
compliment 含有“恭维”之意，为表扬或称赞说些中听的话，而praise 通常用于赞美美好的行为或有美好行为的人。
she accepted his compliment about her dress with a smile.她以微笑接受他对她服装的赞美。
my compliments to your wife.向您的夫人致意。
the flowers are with the compliments of the management.这鲜花是主管部门送的礼物。
3 confusion
(1) 混乱。
in confusion 在混乱中。
(2) 困惑，糊涂。

adj. 1) 特殊的，精心制成的。

3) 别致的，花样的，花哨的。

vt. 1)喜欢，想要。
what do you fancy for supper? 你们晚饭想吃什么？
i don’t fancy going all the way in such a bad weather. 我不喜欢在这样的天气里一直这么走着。

fancy working in this heat everyday.. 想想看，每天要在这样的高温下工作。

4. proposal
n. 1)提议，建议 2）求婚。

1．slip
vi. 1) 滑（倒），滑落。
it was icy, and people were slipping and sliding all along the street. 地上结层冰，街上的行人纷纷滑倒在地。

2）溜走。she slipped into the room when no one was looking.她趁无人注意之时溜进了房间。
