中华人民共和国全国普通高等学校招生入学考试(national higher education entrance examination)，也称全国大学入学考试(national college entrance examination)。相当于美国sat reasoning test。考试几乎是进入所有高等学校(higher education institution)本科阶段(undergraduate level)学习的必要条件(prerequisite)。
决定了一个人一生的职业轨迹(professional trajectory)。
学生一般在中学教育(secondary education)最后一年参加高考。
从2024年开始已经没有年龄限制(age restriction)。
考试成绩不好(a poor performance on the test)几乎就意味着没有机会上大学。
有些人在考试失利后会选择重读(repeat the last year of high school life)，第二年重考(make another attempt/retake the test)。
2024年，中国申请高等教育入学(tertiary education entry)的高考考生(gaokao-takers)达到了创纪录的(a record high)的九百五十万。

学生总成绩(overall mark)通常是各科成绩(subject mark)的加权总和(weighted sum)。

历史(history)、地理(geography)与政治(political education)。申请理工类(science/engineering)与文科类(art/humanities)的考试可以从这两类中选择。
