前言 近三十年來，從國中畢業的人，一定還有印象，國中的英文課本裡，沒有一課附有英文詩歌，這或許是編輯者的一種「短視」。就像我們中國人都會吟幾首「唐詩三百首」一樣；如果你也能背誦幾首優美的英文詩歌，你的人生將會更美、更有詩意。你一旦能隨口誦讀或低聲吟詠它，你將能更深深體會人生的喜悅。
優雅的詩，美麗的歌，即使語詞淺顯而簡短，也能震撼我們的心靈，加深我們對生命的喜悅，溫暖並美化我們的心。詩確實能啟發我們認識人生的真諦。
英文詩被譽為英國文學的花園，我們不讀英文詩，就無法體會欣賞英國文學。可是有些人卻壓根兒就以為詩太艱深。當然，它在韻律的約束上，與散文有若干的不相同，但這些都可以在吟誦閱讀中自然地體會到。
在這裡，我們從斯蒂文生（stevenson）到丁尼生（tennyson）等幾個代表性詩人的詩篇中，選出比較簡單的幾首來。雖然不多，但是每一篇都具有極高的藝術價值。如果同學們能透過這些而觸及詩的境界，那麼就請更上一層樓，閱讀程度更高的作品吧。
常讀詩歌能增強對語言的感受力，以及正確文法的認識，所以還可以做為學習英文的良好教材。一個人若能在人生最純潔的青少年期，接觸到優美的詩，進而領略、感受到人生的美好，體會生命的喜悅，那該有多幸福啊！
英文詩的讀法
我們所居住的這個世界，充滿了各種不同的聲音和旋律。捕捉住那充滿在天地間的美妙旋律，並把它改變為語言的旋律，這就是詩。詩，是文學中的花園。
在詩中，這種旋律稱為韻律。英文詩一般都是把強音節和弱音節交互配列。換句話說，就是情感的旋律，表現而為聲音的強弱和抑揚的起伏。
而其配列，有的是規則的，也有的是並不規則的。又因為其組合的不同，而有不同的名稱。
在所有的文學類型中，詩的情感最廣且深。它用簡短的語詞，唱出各色人的心聲，它還具有能使各個不同的人的心靈相通的表現法。要想品味詩的美，如果知道一些有關韻律法的法則，就會方便得多。
其實與其只研究形式方面，不如努力多去體會詩中所涵蘊的意義，才更重要。換句話說，與其研究詩人，為了將自己的理想、情感傳達給讀者，而運用的技巧---韻律法，不如用心鑑賞詩人寄託在詩中的思想和情感本身，才更重要。
