可最让观众和读者感动的是瑞特对斯佳丽的爱，到达了男人爱女人的极限。但他做不法的生意，发的是不义之财，所以一直被人们所唾弃，也是斯佳丽对其产生防范的一个原因，但主要还是每次相逢他总说中她的内心，而让斯佳丽恼火，从而对他的爱产生疑心。直到有了女儿，把爱转移到女儿身上，人们才对他改变了看法，但女儿夭折，他对斯佳丽的爱也消失贻尽。
