depend之表“依靠”，来自于更土的意思，就是-pend-=hang,也就是吊。
不会的同志再记一次并记死了：de=down。
试想一盏灯在天花板上吊着（hang down from the ceiling)，晃晃悠悠，不由吊下来（hang down)变成掉下来(fall down)，完全依靠(depend upon)天花板的存在(the existence of the ceiling)，也可以说取决于天花板的大力支持(depen/d upon the support ofthe ceiling)。

depend upon之表示“依赖/取决于”，不只是depend之功。军功章里，至少也有on/upon的一半。因为on就有“依靠”之意。不信请看：
